Junior Achievement Awards Seniors With $180K In Scholarships

Junior Achievement of Chicago's annual award breakfast was held on Tuesday, May 10 at Deloitte LLP in Chicago. This year, Junior Achievement High School seniors received more than $180,000 in scholarships thanks to the many friends in the business, professional and educational communities. With their support & belief in higher education, JA of Chicago's students are provided with a terrific opportunity at future success. Joseph Pavlovic, a sophomore from Illinois State University and past JA scholarship recipient, announced the award winners.

The top prize was four Colonel Henry Crown Scholarships, provided by Crown Family Philanthropies. Each scholarship provides $40,000 over the course of four years at an accredited college or university. It also includes a paid summer internship at a Henry Crown affiliated company. The winners were Claire O'Kane of Niles North High School, Jose Barrios of Phoenix Military Academy, Cameron Durr of Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep, and Juan Garcia of Phoenix Military Academy.

Additional scholarships were awarded to Jessica Daley of Streamwood High School, Jessica Casarrubias of Phoenix Military Academy, Vinit Gheewala of Niles West High School, Samuel Brown of Manteno High School, Erik Nava of Phoenix Military Academy, Mia Baker of Valparaiso High School, Jacqueline Contreras of Phoenix Military Academy, Celina Alejos of Joliet High School, and Gelila Woldegebriel of Amundsen High.

JA also honored students who participated in Junior Achievement's JA Company Program. These students organized a business, developed a business plan, created marketing plans to sell their product or service, monitored and evaluated productivity, and after 12 weeks liquidated their company. The honorees were Ali Elganzouri of Barrington High School, Olivia Matthews of Lemont High School, Gabby Boudreau of Manteno High School, Jillian Hoffman of Manteno High School, and Armand Sirkisian of Barrington High School.
